ch. 8
“It was a few weeks ago. She called me to ask if you were coming home, and then, you know, the obligatory check-up questions. Though I didn’t have any answers for her. I was really surprised she still had my number.” Kaila was unnerved by my swirving.
I gripped the steering wheel, getting control of myself and my car.
“Why didn’t you tell me when she called?” I felt completely uncomfortable with the thought of the two speaking to each other, though I wasn’t sure why.
“Because…you weren’t talking to me. Ass.” Kaila smiled. “Relax, she just wanted to make sure you were really coming home, and with me like you told her.”
“Stop freaking out and drive, Al.” Lynn said from the back seat. “Besides, your mom called me too.”
I glared at Lynn through the rear view. “What!?”
“You know your mom. She probably called everyone.” Lynn pointed straight ahead. “Eyes on the road!”
“I think Alyx needs a moment to take in the embarrassment she is feeling. Just breathe, Alyx.” Kaila demonstrated, using her hands as visual aids.
“I don’t know which is worse, my mother checking up on me or you two being absolutely used to it. To the point where you don’t even tell me when she calls. Was this the only time?” I was shouting now, my mother always managing to bring that out in me.
Lynn and Kaila were both silent. Neither of them wanting to fess up. I screamed. “Unbelievable! Fucking bitch!”
“Don’t call your mom that, you know you’re going to regret it later.” Kaila said as she punched me in the arm, as hard as she could. I forgot that she took no mercy with these things.
I breathed slowly, rubbing my arm, calming myself down, thinking about warmer atmospheres.
“What do you have against your mom anyways? She’s a pretty nice lady.” Lynn spoke in defense for a woman she only thought she knew.
“Before I left, I told her I was a lesbian.” I cracked open my window. “She told me I would go to hell if I didn’t change my mind.”
They went quiet, uncomfortable. The wind whistling at high pitch through the window started to hurt my ears, so I rolled it back up.
Then it was really quiet.
